About Scared Stiff Program

Program:

The Scared Stiff program brings together professionals and community leaders together in order to express their concerns of gun violence in the community and to illustrate graphically the impact of gun violence on the community and the destruction of such acts. The program is taken directly into the schools, community centers, recreation centers, juvenile detention centers, and other public forums and will focus on the devastation that occurs when individuals in the community dies from gun shot wounds.

Purpose:

The program is a part of the Midnight Basketball League Program’s health component and is designed to create positive interaction and venues that decrease at-risk youth’s involvement in gun violence within the community. Searching for ways to curb community gun violence, the Scared Stiff program strives to help teens and young adults (ages 13 – 25 years) develop a new respect for life by collaborating with concerned religious leaders, public officials, parents, educators, and concerned citizens.

The program presents teens and young adults with a candid and graphic view of the destructive toll of gun violence and its impact on the community. Ultimately, however, the purpose is to dispel the myth in the minds of at-risk youths that:

1) violent death is honorable and a way of life in urban society and 2) viewing casual gun violence as an acceptable means of resolving conflicts.
